Bollywood Veteran Actor Shashi Kapoor Dies At 79

Shashi Kapoor began his career as a child actor and appeared in more than 150 films, including a dozen in English.

MUMBAI: Bollywood veteran actor Shashi Kapoor died at in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Ambani Hospital , reportedly due to kidney failure. He was 79.He was a member of the Kapoor dynasty, which has dominated the Hindi film industry for decades.

He won several national film awards and was awarded the Padma Bhushan civilian honour by the Indian government in 2011.

He had kidney problem since several years. He was on dialysis for several years,” his nephew, actor Randhir Kapoor, told Press Trust of India. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, he said.

The actor was married to late English actress Jennifer Kendal, with whom he set up Mumbai’s iconic Prithvi Theatre in 1978.As news of his death spread, fans took to social media to express their grief and pay tributes, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shashi Kapoor is survived by daughter Sanjana Kapoor and his two sons Kunal and Karan.Shashi debuted with the 1961 film Dharmputra.

He went on to appear in 116 Hindi films.In 2014, he also received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.Shashi Kapoor was born on March 18, 1938 in Calcutta as Balbir Raj Kapoor. He was the third and the youngest son of legendary film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Kapoor. His elder brothers Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor are noted film actors.

His noted works were Deewaar, Junoon, Kabhi Kabhie, Namak Halaal, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati New Delhi Times, Sharmeelee, Waqt, Trishul, Vijeta, Kalyug, Satyam Shivam Sundaram among others.
